This year’s 2015 League of Legends Worlds viewership surpassed the previous numbers from their own viewership by 33%, from 27 MM (2014) to 36 MM (2015) unique viewer count.

In 2014, League of Legends saw a slight dip in viewership in comparison to 2013. This was due to the timezone difference between east (Asia) and west (US & UK). With the numbers 33% up in 2015, this shows the the general interest in eSports is growing.

The growth of eSports is slowly being accepted through mainstream through new startups, partnerships and acquisitions, read more for details. But surprisingly, traction is coming from all different outlets like Rick Fox buying Gravity, League of Legends LCS team, for one million dollars. It makes me wonder where eSports is headed and the general interest of those who are willing to make a bet at the growth of eSports.

Also, 2015 had some exposure to breaking stereotypes like NBA superstar Gordon Hayward and sports personality Colin Cowherd. This is slowly breaking the barrier of a gamer and being accepted in the general public.

Some reasons to be excited about 2016: StarCraft II, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Street Fighter V, Heroes of the Storm and so much more! With all the big tournaments and pro-gamers competing, the amount of small tournaments and community gaming happening worldwide will surely rise. With eSports becoming a hobby as a spectating sport, the one thing the correlates with that is usually to compete in local tournaments.
